Summary
rcp85 is an experiment of the CMIP5 - Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 ( https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/mips/cmip5 ). CMIP5 is meant to provide a framework for coordinated climate change experiments for the next five years and thus includes simulations for assessment in the AR5 as well as others that extend beyond the AR5.

4.2 rcp85 (4.2 RCP8.5) - Version 1: Future projection (2006-2100) forced by RCP8.5. RCP8.5 is a representative concentration pathway which approximately results in a radiative forcing of 8.5 W m-2 at year 2100, relative to pre-industrial conditions. RCPs are time-dependent, consistent projections of emissions and concentrations of radiatively active gases and particles.

Description
TQA - Technical Quality Assurance 'approved by WDCC'; SQA - Scientific Quality Assurance 'approved by author': For data quality control a number of checks were made. The model development process involves a rigorous assessment before the model is released for operational use. The simulation outputs for the runs were checked by the relevant scientists. To verify that the transformation of model outputs to CMIP5 variables files was correct, the scientists checked all variable outputs for one simulation in detail. All variable files were written using the CMOR library and used the latest available MIP tables. Subsequent QC checks on data structure and format were performed by BADC. For metadata, the raw information was collected from relevant Met Office scientists, entered into our local metadata repository and reviewed by scientists involved with the CMIP5 project. The metadata was then transferred to the CMIP5 questionnaire. A review was performed to verify that the information in the questionnaire was as recorded in the local repository.
Note: 6hrPlev data for ta, ua, and va reduce number of vertical levels at 2079-12.

Error reported by Chris Jones on 2018-03-28 affecting yearly ocean datasets (Oyr): 'A data processing error has come to light which shows that annual files for 2068 and 2092 contain incorrect values. Due to model failures, it was necessary to recreate annual average files from monthly mean files for the year of the crash, but a data processing error has resulted in only partially-complete data going into that reconstruction. The result is that all fields in these Oyr files for those years are incorrect – for example a timeseries of plot of annual mean, global mean fields for most variables shows up "spikes" for the two years in question. For any variables which are also present in the monthly Omon data stream, these files are not affected and may be safely used in analyses or to construct annual mean files afresh.'
